Special guest: Giuseppe G Buonanno, (Azienda Brancati, Sicily)
As you know, Sicily has been a land were all big cultures came around: Greek brought olives and the olive oil culture, while Romans grape and wine and after Arabic brought citrus and Spanish conquistadores chocolate. So now a days, all this products are still available here, even popular ‘Modican Choccolate’ is following and old recipe by the Spanish Conquistadores (that imported from the Aztech). Probably citrus, expecially lemons, we know were used by Romans as a remedy to ‘sgorbuto’ (gouged) a widespread disease on the Roman vessels, who usually did great load of fresh lemons and lemons plants before crossing the Mediterranean.

Monolithos Winery, Cyprus
For the first time on the "Yellow Road" a Cypriot winery. Winemakers from Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Lebanon and even Switzerland were on the "YR"". But there was no Cyprus. Of course, one could ask my fellow student from Riga, Aleksey Sh., who lives there, to take the initiative. But everything is difficult now. And not everyone can be trusted with such an important matter as tasting.

Yellow Road → Our guest Patrizia Passerini, author of the book “Going through wine and vines”
A Wine Journey in Italy with the book “Andare per vini e vitigni” by Patrizia Passerini In 1353 the charming estate, already famous for the quality of its vineyards, was bought by Pietro Alighieri, son of Dante Alighieri, the famous Italian Poet, who had followed his father in exile in Verona. Since twenty-one generations the descendants of the Supreme Poet live in the Villa, a reference point for the viticulture of Valpolicella. Here Masi winery shares its great love for the land with Conti Serego Alighieri, collaborating with them in the production of prestigious wines, heirs of an ancient, noble and wise enological tradition. Tenuta Serego Alighieri is today one of the most prestigious historical Venetian estates. Facing the courtyard with its vines is the historic drying loft for “Appassimento”,the traditional method used in the Venetian regions to concentrate aromas and perfumes in wines. Two prestigious cru wines are made at Villa Serego Alighieri: Vaio Armaron Amarone, which was classed as one of the ten best wines of the world, and Casal Dei Ronchi Recioto. Today, the estate is open to visitors, displaying the soul of the Valpolicella region and its unique traditions. Guests can stay in the magnificent “Foresteria”, as well as book a visit to the vineyards and a tasting of the prestigious wines.

Our guest Patrizia Passerini, author of the book “Going through wine and vines”
A Wine Journey in Italy with the book “Andare per vini e vitigni” by Patrizia Passerini 1 - What is the story of your book “Andare per vini e vitigni? I’m the author of the book “Andare per Vini e Vitigni” (“Going through wine and vines”), which is part of a series called "Ritrovare l'Italia" (“Finding out Italy”) by Il Mulino publishing house. The book comes from the idea that Italy has a very strong and multifaceted cultural identity, which is the result of its complex historical past, also considering the theme of wine. It wants to be a story that unfolds its patterns around places (and therefore itineraries), visible but often flattened to icons without context, and around different times, through the centuries. Andare per Vini e Vitigni is a historical journey in the culture of Italian wine, as different kind of vines, different cultivation processes and winemaking techniques are often the result of the past and people who inhabited the peninsula. The book is a "Grand Tour of Italy", a journey from the south to the north of Italy to find out some of the oldest vines still cultivated today, connecting archeology, history, myths, literature and classical authors (such as Pliny the Elder, Virgil, Horace, Ovid), art and nature. Through the Greeks, the Etruscans, the Romans, the Middle Ages of Dante, the Renaissance Palaces and the eighteenth-century villas, you discover the beauty of vineyards surrounded by woods, vineyards that embrace temples, abbeys, castles, vineyards that stretch on the slopes of a volcano, which climb over impervious mountains or overlooking the sea. Following this itinerary we arrive at the present, finding out wines that derive from ancient vines with their specific characteristics today. It is a way to travel and discover the extraordinary beauty of Italy, which the ancients called "Enotria", meaning "land of wine" because of the ease with which the vine in Magna Graecia grew. It is a book not only for wine lovers, but also for lovers of culture, art and literature.

Quinta de Marrocos, unique Portuguese wines from the Douro Valley
The vineyards of Quinta de Marrocos stretch up to 180 m above sea level on terraces supported by stone walls. The location in the north is one of the key points for smooth ripening of the grapes: if the altitude gives rise to high temperatures, the river breeze cools the vineyards at night. All work is done by hand, this is a centuries-old heritage that has been preserved taking into account the age of the varieties and the quality of the grapes. This type of vineyard is characterized by low yields without irrigation on shale soils with low fertility and slightly acidic pH. Over the years, the vineyards have acquired a natural balance: "they produce what they can, not what they want." With a vines age of over 100 years and a density of over 8000 plants per hectare. More than 50 noble and ancient Douro grape varieties coexist here. Guarded by its emblematic twin trees, the Quinta de Marrocos is one of the oldest Quintas in the Douro. It is located on the left bank of the Douro River, in Baishu Korgo, from where the demarcated port wine region entered

Winery "Eudald Massana Noya", Penedès region, Spain
The Penedès is situated in a privileged territory halfway between Barcelona and Tarragona, between the sea and the mountains. The Penedès landscape is warm and harmonious, full of Mediterranean light, where, depending on where you are, you can see the sea, the Pyrenees or the Montserrat mountain range. This harmony would not be complete without its defining feature: the vineyards. Winegrowing in this part of the world has become the art of working and shaping the land; an art which has been passed down from generation to generation. The care with which the vineyards are treated is complemented by the traditional methods used in the still and sparkling wine-making processes. Although traditional and careful methods are used both in the vineyard and the cellar, modern innovations are also incorporated so that we can progress without losing our essence. The different types of soil, grape varieties and the art of working the land are what make the Penedès a territory with its own identity; one that is is firmly rooted in winegrowing but which is also complemented by its culture and heritage.

Gueda / Casa do Romezal, winery from Portugal
“Each of our wines are different aspects of life, extensions of ourselves, of our soul. They are the various moments in which opening a bottle makes every sense. That is the beauty of the Douro: its ability to deliver elegant, complex, distinct wines.”

Petra Marzia, vineyards overlooking Mount Vesuvius
In Campania in the Vallo di Lauro, Marzano di Nola, where Agostino and Andrea Nappi, two friends with the same surname, who live in the same street of the same town, born in the same place, in the same month and year, are also united by an identical passion: the wine. Thus was born the winemaking partnership aimed at planting a vineyard, which will bear fruit in the years to come, as old as the "stones of the Marzano coast": thus the Petra Marzia winery was born. Initially dedicated to the production of the homonymous wine Petra Marzia - produced in 2017 with a blend of 70% Casavecchia, 20% Aglianico and 10% Merlot grapes which, after 12 months in oak barrels, continues its maturation in the bottle - the new “wine artisans” (as they like to call themselves) have decided to implement the production, integrating it with two noble wines from Campania: Taurasi DOCG and Fiano di Avellino DOCG. Both united by an elegant label, they take the name of "Parlami", a Taurasi reserve with an unmistakable "Hellenic-Aglianico" flavor, and "Ramia", a fresh and pleasant Fiano that is enjoying great success in terms of quality and of its relationship with the price.

Winery Mossi 1558, Emilia-Romagna region, Italy
So, your plane has landed at Bergamo Airport, which is near Milan. In your plans, which, of course, will be adjusted in the course of events, there is a desire to visit Tuscany and swim in the Ligurian (or Tyrenian) Sea. Or, first you decide to swim in the sea and then visit Tuscany. You can go directly to Genoa and then the Ligurian Sea remains - this is it. Or you can rush to Parma, and only then turn to the sea towards La Spezia. Or drive even further to Bologna. But if evening comes soon, and you are already tired, then it is worth slowing down in Piacenza, which is only 70 kilometers from Milan. Yes, the "Genoese" road seems to be shorter, but, starting from Rapallo (towards Chiavari), such serpentines (!), that at night looking for adventure on the mountain slopes of Italy is a very risky activity. What to do in Piacenza itself? Here you will find many tips on the Internet without us. But nearby, 30 kilometers from the city of Piacenza, there is a small winery Mossi 1558 (or Cantina Mossi 1558)

Tuscan wine "Assolati" from Val d'Orcia
If you are not new to finding information on the Internet, you have probably come across the text that I quote below ... ...""The richness and variety of the scenery are not the only unique elements that characterize the area’s pristine terrain; there is also the enogastronomic production, indeed one of Val d'Orcia's primary fortes. Such includes the cacio pecorino of Pienza, the honey from Val d'Orcia, extra-virgin olive oil from Castiglione d'Orcia, the salames of Cinta Senese, as well as mushrooms, truffles, and everything else that is, of course, accompanied by the most famous wine in the world - Brunello di Montalcino"."

Domaine Wardy... For the first time on the Yellow Road, winemakers from Lebanon
For the first time on the Yellow Road, winemakers from Lebanon, Bekaa Valley. Lebanon, in ancient times Phenicia, is considered the most likely homeland of wine. In the ancient world, it was the Phoenician wine, long before the glory of phalern, Cypriot and Chios wines, that was considered the best and most desirable product for the Egyptian, Greek, and then Roman nobility.
